LONDON April 13 – Britain will not be involved in a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz according to British media reports on Sunday.
The reports came after US President Donald Trump announced the US Navy would begin blocking ships entering or leaving the Strait following failed peace talks with Iran.
A UK government spokesperson told Sky News that Britain continues to support freedom of navigation and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz which is needed to support the global economy and reduce the cost of living.
The spokesperson added Britain is working with France and other partners to build a coalition to protect freedom of navigation in the region.
Speaking to Fox News Trump said numerous countries would be helping the United States in operations related to the Strait and added Britain and other nations were sending minesweepers.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said in a phone call urged the United States and Iran to find a way through the crisis.
According to a Downing Street statement both leaders agreed continuation of the ceasefire is vital and all parties should avoid escalation.
The discussion followed US Iran talks over the weekend which failed to reach an agreement.
