Venezuela on Thursday said it has resumed relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after years of suspension, marking a step toward normalizing engagement with global financial institutions.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez welcomed remarks by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva indicating that Venezuela will reactivate its representation at the fund.
Rodríguez said the development would help restore administrative processes linked to Venezuela’s rights and obligations as an IMF member. She described the move as a “major diplomatic achievement” and thanked supporting countries for backing Venezuela’s return.
The IMF suspended relations with Venezuela in 2019 amid disputes over government recognition.
The World Bank Group also announced it was resuming dealings with Venezuela under the current administration, noting that its last loan to the country dates back to 2005.
Officials say the renewed engagement could pave the way for improved financial coordination and future assessments of Venezuela’s economic situation after years of limited institutional contact.
