Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in South Sudan’s capital Juba have welcomed food assistance from China, describing it as vital support amid worsening food insecurity and rising living costs.
The aid, coordinated by the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, targets about 48,000 vulnerable people, including IDPs, returnees, and communities affected by floods and conflict.
Beneficiaries say the assistance has come at a critical time as inflation and economic hardship strain households, with many struggling to secure even one daily meal.
A displaced mother, Flora Kuwa David, said the food aid would help her provide basic meals for her family, noting that her income is insufficient for food and school fees.
The Commission has begun distributing rice donated by China, with the first phase consisting of 37 containers totaling about 814 tonnes. Distribution starts in Juba before expanding to other states and administrative areas.
Officials said the program will be implemented in four phases, with rice first and wheat in later stages. Under the plan, 60 percent of assistance will go to states and administrative areas, while 40 percent remains in the capital region.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Albino Akol Atak Mayom said the initiative reflects cooperation to support vulnerable communities.
Commission Chairperson Stephen Kueth Gach praised China’s humanitarian support, saying it helps preserve lives and strengthen food security among those affected by conflict and climate shocks.
