Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody and Ministry Secretary Udayanga Hemapala resigned on Friday to facilitate an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in coal imports.
According to the President’s Media Division, the resignations aim to ensure a transparent and impartial inquiry by the newly established Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry.
The two officials have faced allegations from opposition parties regarding the import of substandard coal, raising concerns over its impact on electricity generation and efficiency.
Earlier, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake constituted the commission to examine reported irregularities in coal imports and coal-based power generation processes up to April 16, 2026.
The probe is expected to review procurement procedures, quality standards, and decision-making related to coal supplies used in power plants.
Authorities say the findings of the commission will help strengthen accountability and improve governance in the energy sector.
