GENEVA: The European Left Alliance has called on European Union foreign ministers to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing growing public pressure over the situation in Palestine.
In a statement issued ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, the alliance said a European Citizens’ Initiative titled “Justice for Palestine” has gathered over one million signatures in under three months. The group noted the campaign also surpassed national thresholds in 11 EU member states, exceeding the required minimum of seven.
Describing the development as a significant democratic signal, the alliance urged EU policymakers to act without delay. It argued that failure to respond would undermine public trust in the bloc’s foreign policy mechanisms and weaken institutional credibility.
The alliance further accused Israel of ongoing violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, as well as strikes in Lebanon. It said such actions breach Article 2 of the agreement, which links cooperation to respect for human rights.
Reiterating its demand, the group called for the full suspension of the agreement, urging EU ministers to align policy decisions with legal obligations, democratic values, and mounting public sentiment across Europe.
