ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is expected to consider advice from Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, regarding the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, as renewed diplomatic efforts with Iran face uncertainty.
According to sources, the matter was discussed during a recent phone call between the two leaders ahead of a possible second round of US-Iran talks, likely to be held in Islamabad. Field Marshal Munir reportedly emphasized that continued restrictions on the vital shipping route are a major obstacle to meaningful progress with Tehran.
Trump indicated he would review the suggestion, sources added. Earlier, he announced that US representatives would travel to Islamabad for renewed engagement, although Tehran has not formally confirmed participation.
Iran has maintained that lifting restrictions on its ports remains essential for advancing negotiations. President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for rational and diplomatic solutions, stressing that prolonged conflict serves no party’s interests.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role, hosting initial high-level talks earlier this month—the first such engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades. While the talks remained inconclusive, they contributed to a temporary ceasefire.
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to dialogue in a call with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, with both sides warning of wider global economic risks from continued tensions.
