Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and US envoy Steve Witkoff held a phone call on Monday to discuss efforts to advance negotiations between the United States and Iran, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The talks focused on reducing regional tensions and exploring proposals for a mutually acceptable settlement between Washington and Tehran. Both sides reviewed recent diplomatic efforts and stressed the importance of sustaining dialogue to support regional stability.
Abdelatty emphasized the need to continue negotiations to consolidate the ceasefire and work toward a lasting end to hostilities. He said diplomacy and dialogue remain the most effective tools for enhancing security and stability in the Middle East.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing the security concerns of Gulf states and ensuring that any future agreement reflects regional sensitivities. Egypt said it will continue its diplomatic engagement with regional and international partners to support political solutions that strengthen peace.
The discussions come amid ongoing indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran following earlier talks in Islamabad, which failed to produce a breakthrough. The conflict escalated after military operations earlier this year, followed by retaliatory exchanges involving multiple regional actors.
Key unresolved issues include maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on Iranian ports, and Iran’s nuclear enrichment program.
