German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has fallen to the last position in a new popularity survey of the country’s top 20 politicians, according to results published by BILD. The poll places Merz at 20th, down from 18th, with a score of 28.9 points, reflecting a continued decline in public approval.
The survey indicates a broader erosion of support, both nationwide and within his own political base. Among voters aligned with the Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, Merz ranks near the bottom. Only 10 percent of respondents from these groups expressed a positive opinion, while 58 percent reported negative views.
Other conservative figures, including Markus Söder, Hendrik Wüst, and Alexander Dobrindt, recorded stronger public support.
Observers link the decline to economic pressures and geopolitical tensions, particularly developments involving Iran, which have contributed to rising fuel costs and uncertainty. Germany has also revised its growth forecast downward, projecting expansion of 0.5 percent this year.
Earlier surveys similarly highlight widespread dissatisfaction with both the chancellor’s performance and the coalition government.
