The United Kingdom has announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat in a reciprocal move following Moscow’s decision last month to expel a British envoy over alleged spying.
According to an official government statement, the Russian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office after what London described as an “unjustified” action by Russia. The UK subsequently revoked the accreditation of a Russian diplomat, effectively ordering their expulsion.
British authorities strongly condemned Russia’s earlier decision, calling it baseless and accompanied by a hostile public narrative. Officials said such actions amount to harassment and intimidation of diplomatic staff, which the UK considers unacceptable.
The statement emphasized that the move is a direct and proportionate response, reflecting standard diplomatic practice in cases of reciprocal expulsions. It further warned that continued actions by Russia aimed at disrupting diplomatic operations would be viewed as escalation.
The UK government also underlined its commitment to protecting diplomatic personnel and maintaining the integrity of its foreign missions, adding that any further steps by Moscow would be met with firm and measured countermeasures
