YANGON: Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has reappeared in state media for the first time in years, sparking speculation about possible changes in her status under the military regime.
Little has been seen or heard from Suu Kyi since her arrest during the 2021 military takeover led by Min Aung Hlaing. Her lawyers have reportedly not met her for more than three years, while family members, including her son Kim Aris, have had no contact for over two years.
Her legal team told Reuters they received no official information regarding her current conditions, including reports suggesting house arrest. The last known image of Suu Kyi dates back to a court appearance in May 2021, when she faced charges widely criticized as politically motivated.
Her sentence, initially totaling 33 years, has since been reduced multiple times. Observers believe her reappearance may indicate a shift by the military leadership, which is seeking to ease international isolation and strengthen its political position.
The junta has also held elections aimed at restoring a civilian framework, though real power remains with military authorities. Once globally admired for her non-violent struggle and Nobel Peace Prize recognition, Suu Kyi’s reputation declined following her defense of Myanmar at the International Court of Justice over Rohingya-related allegations.
