Azerbaijan’s parliament voted to suspend cooperation with the European Parliament in all areas, accusing it of anti-Azerbaijani rhetoric, slander, and interference in internal affairs. The National Assembly resolution said parliamentary engagement is based on mutual respect and dialogue, but claimed these principles have been undermined by recent actions.
The resolution stated that the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly had turned into instruments of pressure and interference. It added that despite earlier restoration of ties following appeals from the European side, commitments were not upheld and critical positions continued.
It further criticized the European Parliament, alleging bias, misinformation, and influence of interest groups. It said the institution had become a platform promoting anti-Azerbaijan sentiment while undermining peace efforts in the South Caucasus region.
In a separate development, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the EU ambassador in Baku over a recent European Parliament resolution. It rejected claims regarding Karabakh, cultural heritage, and detainees, calling them unfounded and interference in domestic affairs. The ministry said individuals referred to as prisoners were convicted of serious crimes, while others had left the region voluntarily under reintegration arrangements.
Baku also urged European institutions to avoid steps that could further damage bilateral relations and hinder the ongoing normalization process in the South Caucasus region.
