MIRPUR (AJK), May 10: Like the rest of the world, International Mother’s Day was observed across Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday with great enthusiasm, devotion, and deep emotional respect, highlighting the mother as the supreme source of love, comfort, and affection for children.
The day is globally celebrated on different dates, with the second Sunday of May observed in many countries including Pakistan, the United States, Canada, and Australia. In 2026, it fell on May 10, while other regions such as the Arab world observe it on March 21 and France on the last Sunday of May.
Across AJK, special ceremonies were held in various cities to honour mothers and acknowledge their central role in family life and society. The observance reflected a renewed commitment to love, respect, and care for mothers, in line with Islamic teachings that emphasize the high status of motherhood.
People across the region conveyed heartfelt wishes to their mothers, prayed for their long lives, and expressed gratitude for their unconditional care. Those whose mothers had passed away offered prayers for the eternal peace of their souls.
Speaking on the occasion, retired Secretary Information, Tourism and Archaeology Mrs. Midhat Shehzad highlighted the exceptional status of mothers in Islam and stressed the importance of respecting and honouring them, especially in old age. She described the word “Maan” as one of the most beautiful words, noting its emotional depth and spiritual meaning in society.
Social worker Maryam Qureshi said the true value of a mother is fully realized only when she is no longer present. She urged young people to always obey and respect their mothers and uphold Islamic values that emphasize kindness, obedience, and dignity toward parents.
She said a mother may be a small word, but it carries an immeasurable world of love, sacrifice, and emotional strength that shapes generations.
She added that mothers are the backbone of families, playing a vital role in nurturing moral values, discipline, and compassion in children. She further called on society to strengthen family bonds and ensure elderly mothers are treated with dignity, care, and continuous emotional support in every phase of life.
