Tehran, May 11 — Iran on Monday described its response to the latest US proposal aimed at ending the conflict as a “generous and responsible” initiative focused on stopping hostilities and ensuring maritime security in the Gulf region.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran had not sought concessions from Washington but instead called for an immediate end to the war and measures to halt attacks on Iranian shipping routes.
Speaking to state media, Baqaei reaffirmed that Pakistan continues to serve as the official mediator between Iran and the United States, while countries including Qatar are also contributing diplomatic support to the ongoing discussions.
He emphasized that diplomatic negotiations must be guided by national interests, stressing that Iran would continue defending its interests while remaining open to diplomatic opportunities whenever appropriate.
Regional tensions have remained high since US and Israeli strikes against Iran on Feb. 28 triggered retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, affecting maritime trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, though negotiations in Islamabad have yet to achieve a lasting agreement. The temporary truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump to allow further diplomatic engagement
