UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the 45-day extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel following negotiations facilitated by the United States.
In a statement issued Saturday, the UN chief expressed support for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities and reducing the suffering of civilians living on both sides of the Blue Line. He urged all parties involved to fully observe the ceasefire, halt further attacks, and respect international humanitarian law.
The extension follows what Washington described as “productive” discussions between Lebanese and Israeli representatives held through US mediation. According to the US State Department, the ceasefire, originally due to expire on April 16, has now been prolonged for another 45 days to allow additional progress in negotiations.
US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott announced the decision on social media after a third round of talks hosted at the State Department.
Despite the truce agreement, reports indicate Israeli strikes in Lebanon have continued since the ceasefire first came into effect under US mediation.
