NEW YORK, June 1 — The United Nations on Monday voiced deep concern over escalating military activity in Lebanon, warning that renewed violence could undermine stability efforts following a US-mediated ceasefire.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization is particularly concerned by Israeli warnings of possible strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, adding that such developments have increased fear and uncertainty among civilians.
“We are deeply alarmed by the escalation in military activities across southern Lebanon and beyond,” Dujarric said, urging all parties to respect the cessation of hostilities and avoid further escalation.
He stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted and reiterated the UN’s condemnation of civilian casualties. Dujarric emphasized that diplomacy remains the only viable path to lasting peace and stability.
The UN also expressed hope that US-sponsored talks between Lebanon and Israel, due to resume on Tuesday, would be given a genuine chance to succeed.
Despite a ceasefire that took effect in April and was later extended, hostilities have continued. According to Lebanese authorities, thousands have been killed since renewed fighting erupted earlier this year.
The developments come amid broader regional efforts to reduce tensions and advance diplomatic solutions in the Middle East.
