UNITED NATIONS, June 23 — The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday aimed at strengthening accountability for crimes committed against UN peacekeepers, emphasizing the need to investigate and prosecute attacks targeting personnel serving in peace operations.
The resolution, co-authored by Pakistan and Denmark, was supported by all 15 Council members and co-sponsored by more than 100 UN member states.
According to the UN, 1,095 peacekeepers have been killed since 1948, including 359 since 2013, while thousands more have been injured in the line of duty.
Ahead of the vote, Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the Council must go beyond expressions of concern. He said condemnations and condolences are important but insufficient, and the draft introduces practical steps to strengthen accountability, including annual reporting by the UN secretary-general on investigations and prosecutions.
Following adoption, Denmark’s UN envoy Christina Markus Lassen welcomed unanimous support and thanked Council members for engagement. She said the resolution sends a strong message to over 50,000 personnel serving in peacekeeping missions and highlighted Denmark’s cooperation with Pakistan.
Adopted as UN Resolution 2823, it condemns attacks on peacekeepers, says such acts may constitute war crimes, and calls on states to ensure accountability and justice.
