Commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz rose more than 50% over the past week, reflecting recovery in maritime activity amid fragile US-Iran negotiations following a temporary agreement reached on June 14.
Data from analytics firm Kpler showed 223 vessels transited the waterway during June 15–21, rising to 343 during June 22–28. Daily averages increased from 32 to 49 transits.
Despite the increase, shipping activity remains around 70% below pre-conflict levels following disruptions caused by earlier military tensions and retaliatory strikes. Operators continue to exercise caution due to geopolitical uncertainty.
Before escalation, the Strait of Hormuz typically handled around 130 vessels per day. Recent figures show a partial rebound, with highest daily traffic reaching 76 vessels on June 24, the busiest day since conflict began in late February.
Tankers carrying crude oil and petroleum products from Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq and Kuwait accounted for most transits. At least 6 million barrels of crude passed through the strait on Monday.
A significant portion of traffic continues using Iranian territorial waters, including shadow fleet and sanctioned vessels, highlighting ongoing regulatory and security complexities in a critical energy corridor.
