Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has expressed optimism that the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara will proceed successfully, with US President Donald Trump and European allies expected to bridge differences over defense burden-sharing.
Speaking ahead of the summit, Crosetto said preparations are in place to ensure commitments are met by all member states. “The Ankara summit is prepared so that everything works, commitments will be honored, and each country will arrive having done its part,” he said, according to La Repubblica. He added that he does not foresee major issues compared to previous summits, noting, “We’ll see what Trump does.”
During remarks at a think tank event on defense and international security, Crosetto also downplayed reports of tensions between the Italian government and the Trump administration.
He emphasized that relations with the United States remain strong, stating, “Real relations with the US are excellent, just as they were a year ago, five years ago.” He further noted that cooperation between military institutions and defense ministries remains robust.
Commenting on President Trump’s leadership style, Crosetto said the US president “has his own way of conducting politics, of pressuring his allies,” describing it as a method of encouraging responses from partner nations ahead of key international decisions.
