Russia on Monday summoned Sweden’s ambassador to Moscow to protest recent drone incidents targeting the Russian Embassy in Stockholm, accusing Swedish authorities of failing to ensure the mission’s security.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it lodged a strong protest over Thursday evening’s attack, when two drones reportedly entered the embassy compound. Moscow criticized what it described as Sweden’s inadequate response to repeated security breaches affecting Russian diplomatic facilities.
Russia said Sweden is obligated under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to protect foreign diplomatic missions and demanded comprehensive measures to prevent similar incidents.
Earlier, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that the Swedish ambassador would be summoned over what she called repeated drone attacks on the Russian Embassy.
According to the ministry, one drone dropped a container of red paint inside the embassy compound, while another carrying a mock improvised explosive device crashed near the mission’s building. Russian officials said the incidents were intended to intimidate embassy personnel.
Moscow also criticized Swedish law enforcement agencies for failing to prevent similar attacks, warning that the worsening security around its diplomatic missions remains a matter of serious concern.
