Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa held talks in Ankara on Wednesday, focusing on bilateral relations and regional developments amid the NATO summit hosted by Türkiye.
According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, the closed-door meeting at the presidential complex reviewed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries and discussed regional challenges.
Erdogan reaffirmed that Ankara would continue supporting the Syrian people and efforts to strengthen ties with Damascus. He stressed that keeping Syria away from regional conflicts was essential for the country’s reconstruction and stability.
Sharaa attended the NATO summit as a guest, where leaders of the alliance’s 32 member states and partner countries discussed European security, defense capabilities, military modernization, spending targets, and continued support for Ukraine.
The Ankara meeting marked the second NATO summit hosted by Türkiye after the 2004 Istanbul gathering. The event also provided opportunities for bilateral discussions on political, security, and economic cooperation.
Türkiye has been a NATO member for nearly 75 years after joining the alliance in 1952.
