Volkswagen faces growing labor tensions as employees demand clarity over reported factory closures and possible mass layoffs. The company’s top labor representative Daniela Cavallo has criticized management for leaving workers uncertain and urged CEO Oliver Blume to directly address employees about restructuring plans.
German media reports suggested that Volkswagen may shut several production facilities, including plants in Zwickau, Emden, Hannover and Audi’s Neckarsulm site, potentially affecting around 40,000 jobs. However, a key Supervisory Board meeting in Wolfsburg ended without an official announcement on closures or workforce reductions.
Reports indicated that the board rejected management’s restructuring proposal, with labor representatives and the state of Lower Saxony opposing the plans. Cavallo said prolonged speculation has created unnecessary anxiety among employees and called for immediate transparency from company leadership.
The labor representative warned that uncertainty is damaging employee confidence and demanded a clear roadmap from management regarding the company’s future strategy. Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest automakers, is facing increasing pressure to balance cost-cutting measures with job security and maintain stability across its German operations.
