We received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, may Allah have mercy upon him, who passed away in Doha this morning. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of nation-building and achievement, and a distinguished life that will forever be remembered as one of the most influential leaders of his generation.
As we pay tribute to one of Qatar’s greatest statesmen, as well as one of the most distinguished leaders of the Islamic World and the wider region, we remember an exceptional figure whose vision and leadership left an indelible mark on the modern history of the region.
The late Father Amir was a towering statesman who guided his country through a defining chapter in its history. Under his leadership, the foundations of a modern, confident, and prosperous state were firmly established, transforming Qatar into a respected global actor and an influential voice on issues of regional and international importance.
He was not merely a ruler, but the architect of a remarkable transformation, a patron of knowledge and culture, and a visionary leader endowed with extraordinary foresight. He possessed the wisdom to anticipate the future and the insight to recognize global transformations before they unfolded.
Throughout his life, he remained a steadfast advocate of justice, peace and the legitimate causes of the Islamic world. His presence at international forums was steadfast, and his commitment to justice unwavering. On Palestine, his voice was resolute; he remained steadfast in his support for the Palestinian cause, and his support for Jerusalem and its historic status never wavered. Wherever injustice prevailed, he stood with courage and conviction, never abandoning what was right or compromising his principles. He embodied the belief that the dignity of a nation lies in the strength of its principles, and that the true stature of a state is measured not by the size of its territory, but by the steadfastness of its values.
His greatness was equally reflected in his humanity and humility, qualities that endeared him to his people and earned their enduring affection. He was a father to the people of Qatar before he was their Amir, sharing both their joys and their sorrows.
His generosity and benevolence extended far beyond Qatar’s borders. Carrying the concerns of his nation in his heart, he devoted himself tirelessly to promoting dialogue, resolving conflicts, and advancing peace, stability, and prosperity across the region and beyond.
As I reflect on this profound loss in my capacity as the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the sisterly State of Qatar, I recall with deep appreciation the historic friendship between the late Father Amir and H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye. During H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s tenure as Prime Minister, they worked with determination and vision to elevate Turkish-Qatari relations to an unprecedented level. The late Father Amir stood as a steadfast supporter and sincere friend of Türkiye in both its most challenging moments and its finest times. Through his leadership, enduring bridges of fraternity were built between our two nations, laying the foundations of a strategic partnership rooted in mutual trust, genuine respect, and a shared commitment to justice and common values.
The Turkish people will always remember with gratitude his generosity, his wisdom, and his principled positions. His name will forever remain engraved in our hearts as one of the foremost symbols of the enduring friendship between Ankara and Doha.
On behalf of the Republic of Türkiye and the Turkish community in Qatar, I extend my deepest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, to the esteemed Al Thani family, to the brotherly people of Qatar, and to all residents of the State of Qatar.
