Doha, July 12 (QNA): HH the late Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, one of Qatar’s historic leaders and the architect of its modern renaissance, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of achievements that transformed the State of Qatar into a leading regional and international model for development and progress.
During his rule from 1995 to 2013, Qatar witnessed comprehensive transformation across economic, political, social, cultural, educational, healthcare, media and sports sectors. His visionary leadership established the foundations of a modern state based on sustainable development, investment in human resources and openness to global knowledge and innovation.
One of the most significant achievements of his era was the development of Qatar’s energy sector. Through the strategic expansion of the North Field and the growth of liquefied natural gas production, Qatar emerged as one of the world’s leading LNG exporters, creating a strong economic foundation and securing prosperity for future generations.
HH the Father Amir introduced several landmark initiatives that shaped Qatar’s future. The establishment of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in 1995 reflected his belief that human development and knowledge were the foundation of national progress. The Qatar Investment Authority, established in 2005, strengthened economic diversification and expanded Qatar’s global investment presence.
A major milestone during his leadership was the adoption of Qatar’s Permanent Constitution in 2004 following a public referendum. The Constitution strengthened institutional governance, established the principles of separation of powers and provided a framework for the country’s continued development.
HH the Father Amir also played a historic role in transforming Qatar’s media landscape. Restrictions on local press were lifted, the Ministry of Information was abolished in 1998, and Al Jazeera was launched in 1996, creating a new era in Arab and international media. These steps reflected his vision of strengthening communication, openness and the exchange of ideas.
Under his leadership, Qatar witnessed unprecedented infrastructure development. Major projects including Hamad International Airport, Hamad Port, Qatar Rail, Lusail City and Msheireb Downtown Doha became symbols of the country’s rapid modernization and supported Qatar’s emergence as a global economic and cultural hub.
Education, healthcare and culture remained central priorities during his reign. Education City became a regional centre for learning and research, hosting leading international universities and scientific institutions. The healthcare sector expanded significantly with new hospitals, specialised medical centres and advanced healthcare services.
The cultural sector also flourished through major projects including Qatar Museums, the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village and the restoration of Souq Waqif. These initiatives preserved Qatar’s heritage while promoting cultural exchange with the world.
HH the Father Amir’s foreign policy strengthened Qatar’s role as a respected international partner. The country became known for mediation efforts, humanitarian support and promoting dialogue between nations. Qatar hosted major international conferences and played an active role in regional and global diplomacy, reinforcing Doha’s position as a centre for peace and negotiation.
His commitment to sports also brought historic achievements. Qatar hosted numerous international sporting events and developed world-class facilities. The successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in 2010 marked a historic moment as Qatar became the first Arab and Muslim country to be awarded the tournament.
During his reign, Qatar also witnessed significant social development, including improvements in public services, support for citizens’ welfare and initiatives encouraging youth development, entrepreneurship and community participation.
On June 25, 2013, HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani transferred leadership to HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of Qatar’s development journey.
The legacy of HH the late Father Amir remains deeply embedded in Qatar’s institutions, achievements and international standing. His leadership transformed Qatar into a modern nation with a strong economy, advanced infrastructure and a respected voice on the global stage.
