The British government announced Monday that it is moving to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and two other organizations as national security threats under a new legal framework.
The other groups named are the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR), which Britain says is linked to Iran, and the Volunteer Corps, overseen by Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff (GRU).
If approved by Parliament, the organizations will become the first groups designated under the National Security (State Threats) Act 2026, according to Security Minister Angela Eagle.
The designation would make it a criminal offence to support or assist the groups in activities connected to Britain, or knowingly receive material benefits from them. Some offences could carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The IRGC is already subject to British sanctions, while the new designation system operates separately from the process for banning terrorist organizations under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The organizations named have not issued immediate responses.
