Moscow: Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said Tuesday that it had prevented a planned drone attack targeting a strategic facility in the Moscow region.
According to the FSB, the alleged plot involved 35 first-person-view drones that had been secretly brought into Russia and were intended to be launched remotely from a warehouse near the targeted site.
The agency said intelligence information led to a special operation in which all drones were destroyed without causing damage to the facility or putting nearby residents at risk.
The FSB said the main suspect, a Russian citizen, was detained after allegedly assembling and activating the drones and establishing contact with operators abroad. It added that another suspect was killed after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers during an attempted arrest.
The FSB said it had opened a criminal investigation on charges related to a terrorist act.
The agency also reported that it had previously uncovered similar alleged plots involving drone attacks on military airfields in Rostov-on-Don, the Amur region and the Chelyabinsk region.
