LONDON: Climate change is rapidly reshaping weather patterns across the United Kingdom, with extreme heat and rising temperatures becoming increasingly common, according to the latest State of the UK Climate report.
The study says 2025 was the UK’s warmest year on record, marking the sixth record-breaking year this century. Scientists noted that four of the past five years rank among the warmest ever recorded, with average temperatures rising by about 0.25 degrees Celsius per decade since the 1980s.
The report found that the period from 2016 to 2025 was 1.33 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1961-1990 average. Regions in northern and higher-altitude Britain are now experiencing temperatures once associated with southern England.
Researchers also highlighted a sharp rise in extreme heat. Parts of southeast England have recorded increases of up to 4.5 degrees Celsius in the hottest day of the year, while the number of days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius has quadrupled in some areas, including Greater London.
Climate experts said the findings provide clear evidence that global warming is no longer a future concern but an ongoing reality affecting communities across the United Kingdom.
