Two American tourists were injured in a knife attack near the entrance of the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens on Tuesday, Greek police said.
The incident occurred around 8:05 a.m. when a 60-year-old man allegedly attacked a Greek-American couple with a knife, according to local media reports. The woman suffered a minor hand injury, while the man sustained a more serious leg injury.
Both victims received first aid at the scene before being transferred to a hospital in Athens for medical treatment.
Police arrested the suspect, who reportedly has a criminal record, including previous charges related to carrying a knife and other offences. Local media also reported that the man had previously come to the attention of prosecutors over cases involving psychiatric hospitalization.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack at one of Greece’s most visited historic landmarks.
