WASHINGTON, July 22: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged Syria to focus on addressing its internal challenges while strengthening security along its border with Lebanon to prevent efforts aimed at destabilizing the country.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Rubio said the United States is encouraging the Syrian government to concentrate on rebuilding the country and addressing its domestic priorities rather than becoming involved in regional conflicts. He emphasized that Washington wants Syria to create conditions for long-term stability and national recovery.
Rubio noted that the US decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism is intended to support the country’s economic revival, describing it as an important step toward reconstruction and economic growth.
He also highlighted Syria’s long history of diverse communities living together peacefully, saying the new government has a significant responsibility to preserve national unity and strengthen internal stability.
Referring to Hezbollah, Rubio said the group has sought to undermine Syria’s new leadership over time. He stressed that one of the most effective measures Damascus can take is to secure its border with Lebanon to prevent the movement of weapons and armed groups that could threaten the country’s security and long-term stability.
