MIRPUR (AJK), July 26: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday said the future leadership of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) should be decided solely by the people of Kashmir through the AJK General Elections 2026.
Addressing journalists at the Kashmir Press Club in Mirpur, Memon urged political rivals, including leaders from the federal government, to avoid interfering in the electoral process and focus on their official responsibilities.
He alleged that some political parties that had previously ignored the people of Kashmir were now seeking their support during the election campaign. He said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders visited Mirpur after the conclusion of the election campaign to monitor the situation and help prevent alleged irregularities.
Memon claimed that buses and trucks were being used for campaign-related activities a day before polling and questioned whether such measures could influence voters. He expressed confidence that the politically aware people of Mirpur would not be affected by such tactics.
He called on the AJK Election Commission to take notice of alleged violations of the election code of conduct, including the reported involvement of federal ministers in election activities.
Highlighting the PPP’s stance on Kashmir, Memon said the party had consistently raised the issue at international forums, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also presented Kashmir’s case globally.
He expressed confidence in the PPP’s electoral prospects, saying voters would reject attempts to influence them through financial or material incentives.
The allegations were made by Sharjeel Inam Memon during a media interaction in Mirpur. They have not been independently verified, and no immediate response was available from the AJK Election Commission or the individuals mentioned.
