WARSAW: Poland has joined the European Union initiative to develop artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactories after signing a joint procurement agreement with the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking.
The agreement allows Poland to participate in the EU-wide selection process for planned AI infrastructure facilities, according to Polish Deputy Digital Affairs Minister Dariusz Standerski.
Poland aims to host a medium-scale AI gigafactory capable of supporting at least 75,000 AI accelerators. The government has allocated more than 400 million zlotys (about $106 million) for the project and is currently seeking cooperation with private-sector partners to build and operate the facility.
The first EU procurement round is expected to select seven AI gigafactories, with contracts scheduled to be signed in early 2027. The facilities are expected to become operational in 2028.
Standerski said Poland is also preparing a cooperation agreement with the Czech Republic and has received support from Lithuania, while talks with other EU member states are continuing.
The initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s artificial intelligence capabilities by expanding advanced computing infrastructure and supporting innovation across the region.
