UNITED NATIONS, July 30: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over escalating hostilities in the Middle East, warning that the conflict could widen further unless diplomatic efforts are restored.
UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that Guterres has been concerned for some time that failure to return to negotiations could result in a broader regional crisis.
Haq said the UN chief has repeatedly raised concerns over renewed fighting, escalation and the expansion of the conflict, describing recent developments as “not positive.”
He stressed that the United Nations wants all parties to halt hostilities and return to dialogue through diplomatic channels.
The spokesperson also highlighted mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar and other countries, saying such initiatives could provide a pathway towards renewed negotiations.
Regional tensions have intensified in recent weeks amid confrontations involving the United States and Iran, with attacks and retaliatory actions affecting military targets and facilities in several parts of the region.
Guterres called on all sides to prioritize diplomacy, reduce tensions and pursue peaceful solutions to prevent further instability in the Middle East.
