TEHRAN: Iran and Oman are discussing the establishment of a temporary route to ensure safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday.
Baghaei said the talks focus on creating an intermediate corridor between existing routes through Omani and Iranian waters. He added that the arrangement would be temporary until a permanent route is agreed upon.
The Iranian official said discussions are aimed at facilitating round-trip shipping movement rather than creating multiple separate routes.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said earlier that negotiations with Oman were in their final stages, according to Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, connecting the Gulf region with international markets. Any disruption in the waterway can affect global energy supplies and shipping operations.
Baghaei also said Iran would take measures regarding a recent attack on an Iranian-linked vessel, while regional tensions continue to draw international attention.
