TEHRAN: Iran and the United States are not currently holding direct negotiations, but messages between the two sides continue to be exchanged through mediators, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, Araghchi said direct talks could not resume until Washington addresses issues related to an earlier memorandum of understanding and provides compensation for what Iran considers violations of the agreement.
He said mediators were continuing efforts to explore possible ways to resume negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Meanwhile, Araghchi said discussions between Iran and Oman on establishing an alternative maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz had made significant progress and reached their final stage.
He clarified that the discussions did not mean the Strait itself was being reopened, adding that any reopening would depend on several conditions.
Regional tensions intensified following US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February. Iran and the United States later reached a ceasefire in April and signed a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at ending their military confrontation and achieving a lasting peace agreement.
The arrangement subsequently collapsed, followed by nearly two weeks of renewed hostilities before US President Donald Trump halted the attacks amid reports of efforts to pursue negotiations.
