BEIJING, Aug. 11: China plans to establish a modern coal industry system by 2030 as it seeks to strengthen energy security while advancing its transition toward cleaner energy, according to a newly issued development plan.
The plan, released by the National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration, calls for upgrading the coal industry during the 2026-2030 period as coal consumption is expected to reach its peak.
China will raise standards for coal resource development, expand advanced production capacity and gradually phase out outdated and inefficient mines.
By 2030, large modern mines are expected to account for 87 percent of total coal production capacity, while intelligent mines are projected to represent 75 percent.
The plan also expects five major coal supply bases to contribute more than 80 percent of national output.
China will promote cleaner coal use, improve commercial coal quality and upgrade coal-fired power generation, while expanding coal use as an industrial feedstock in an orderly manner.
The plan also calls for greater development of coalbed methane to improve mine safety, increase clean energy supplies and reduce emissions.
China aims to produce 26 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane and utilize 6.5 billion cubic meters of coal mine gas by 2030.
