Qatar Organizes Side Event in UN Chiefs of Police Summit

New York, June 30 (QNA) – The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations organized a side event on the sidelines of the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2024) titled “Global Security Lessons from FIFA World Cup 2022: Insights and Applications for International Peacekeeping.”

The event took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York and was attended by HE Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Technical and Specialized Affairs Staff Maj. Gen. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director of the Arab and International Police Communication Department at the Ministry of Interior and the State of Qatar’s candidate for INTERPOL Executive Committee’s membership for the 2024-2025 term in the upcoming elections to be held in Glasgow next year Lt. Col. Ali Mohammed Al Ali, and Judicial Affairs Officer at the UN Department of Peace Operations Mohamed Abdelaziz Gadelhaq Ibrahim.

In her opening speech, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani underlined the successful organization of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, emphasizing that ensuring the safety and security of participants and fans was among the top priorities of the event organizers.

HE highlighted several programs and initiatives supported by the State of Qatar in this regard, including Qatar’s support for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism’s “Global Programme on the Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism.” She also highlighted Doha’s hosting of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), an independent organization that addresses the most prominent challenges and issues facing the world of sport, as well as to protect it from emerging threats.

Lt. Col. Ali Mohammed Al Ali explained that the security arrangements made by the Security and Safety Operations Committee (SSOC) in preparation for hosting the tournament, including providing recommendations during the stadium design phase, were at the highest security standards. The committee also conducted comprehensive studies to ensure the implementation of security and preventive measures for the safety of the fans, he added.

He expressed the Committee’s aspiration to share its experience with government officials responsible for law enforcement and civilian protection, affirming that the State of Qatar continues its strenuous efforts to develop security regulations as part of its plans to enhance safety systems and implement Qatar National Vision 2030, since its organization of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The event was attended by several government representatives participating in the UN Chiefs of Police Summit 2024. It provided a valuable opportunity to learn about the State of Qatar’s experience in securing one of the world’s largest and most important sporting events and to discuss ways to advance cooperation with security institutions and governments through the exchange of experiences and best practices.
