Doha, July 21 (QNA) – The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has announced its upcoming regional forum titled “The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Planning and Following Up on the Implementation of National Visions in Areas Related to Human Rights.” This significant event is set to take place in the Sultanate of Oman on July 24 and 25.
The forum is being organized in collaboration with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, headquartered in Doha, and the Omani Human Rights Commission. Additional support comes from prominent international entities such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, and the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee.
Anticipated to draw 200 participants along with 50 organizations from the UN and other international and regional bodies, the forum aims to fortify the role of national human rights institutions in aligning national visions with human rights principles. This initiative seeks to identify and prioritize human rights issues within national visions, harmonize laws and legislation with human rights standards, and enhance the capabilities of those responsible for implementing national visions.
HE Chairperson of the NHRC, Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah emphasized the forum’s goal to activate adherence to the Paris Principles, which support and guide the implementation of national visions. She highlighted the importance of providing comprehensive data, information, and statistics to measure progress in human rights-related areas and ensure the integration of sustainable development goals (SDGs) within national frameworks.
Al Attiyah elaborated that the forum aims to illuminate national visions concerning human rights, offering a platform for experts, specialists, academics, and decision-makers to identify priorities, review best practices, confront challenges, and share successful experiences. This collaborative approach is intended to aid decision-makers in formulating appropriate strategies and plans that bolster the role of national human rights institutions in overseeing the implementation of national visions.
She further noted that national visions encompassing civil, political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, and developmental rights serve as fundamental references for future planning across various countries. The development and execution of strategies, programs, and mechanisms based on integrated work systems are crucial for achieving the desired goals and outcomes, as well as for performance review and monitoring.
The forum will also focus on applying a human rights-based perspective in the planning and implementation of national visions, ensuring equality and non-discrimination, and incorporating United Nations human rights concepts. The inclusion of SDGs, transparency, accountability, and the establishment of indicators to monitor and track progress in human rights will be key discussion points.
The NHRC Chairperson’s remarks underscore the forum’s dedication to enhancing the operational capacity of national human rights institutions, thereby ensuring that national visions are effectively aligned with global human rights standards.
