Today marks one year since October 7, when Hamas launched rockets into Israel, resulting in the death of at least 1,163 people and the capture of over 240 Israeli civilians. This attack triggered Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes on Gaza, killing scores of civilians. Over the past year, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has claimed the lives of 41,870 Palestinians—an average of 114 per day.
This day also marks a year of deep global division—between those who stand with Israel and those who support Palestine. The past year has been a journey of relearning the narratives of war, apartheid, settler colonialism, and the notion of ‘self-defense.’ Voices raised in support of Gaza have often been met with the persistent question: “But do you condemn Hamas?”
For 365 days—52 weeks—Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has been relentless, expanding into Lebanon and drawing in nations like the U.S., Iran, and Syria. The conflict has left its mark not just on political discourse but on everyday lives across the globe
