HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), met today with HE Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to discuss shared priorities and expand cooperation between Qatar’s NHRC and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
HE Al Attiyah reaffirmed Qatar’s readiness to develop joint initiatives that align with global priorities, emphasizing the importance of stronger regional collaboration to reinforce human rights protection systems. She highlighted the NHRC’s productive partnership with the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre, which has supported extensive training for government institutions and civil society to build national capacity and promote a culture of human rights.
Al Attiyah outlined major legislative reforms implemented in Qatar, including measures ensuring equality in political rights and the issuance of the Persons with Disabilities Law, which enhances alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She noted that the forthcoming Child Law will mark a significant step in strengthening protection for children in care, education, and safeguarding from violence and exploitation.
She also pointed to Qatar’s progress in labor reforms, developed in cooperation with the International Labour Organization, including abolishing the kafala system, introducing a minimum wage, and improving grievance mechanisms.
Regarding women’s rights, Al Attiyah highlighted growing female participation in the judiciary, prosecution, armed forces, and civil aviation, with women now outnumbering men in higher education enrollment.
