Paris, January 06 (QNA) – European allies of Ukraine, alongside US envoys, convened in Paris on Tuesday to discuss potential security guarantees for Kyiv and to explore the structure of a multinational force in the event of a ceasefire agreement with Russia.
The meeting, held under the banner of the “Coalition of the Willing,” represents a key step in European and US efforts to maintain a coordinated approach in supporting Ukraine, while pursuing intensified diplomatic efforts to end the conflict that has continued since 2022.
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit, alongside US representatives. The discussions will see participation from officials and leaders of approximately 35 countries, including 27 heads of state or government. Macron and Zelensky are expected to hold a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the conclusion of the summit.
According to the French Presidency, discussions will focus on developing a shared vision for ceasefire mechanisms and monitoring, including the use of drones and satellites, as well as procedures to respond to potential violations. Operational aspects of a multinational force providing security assurances on air, sea, and land will also be reviewed, though some details, such as troop numbers or funding, remain confidential for security reasons.
The summit comes amid stalled communications between Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow on key issues, including territorial claims. The Kremlin recently reinforced its positions following allegations—denied by Ukraine—of an attempted drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence, while Moscow continues to pursue its objectives in Ukraine through both negotiations and military measures.
