ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (AA) — Confusion persisted Thursday over the timing of a Gaza ceasefire, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the truce would take effect later tonight following government approval, while several regional outlets reported that it had already begun earlier in the day.
According to Israeli media, the Cabinet is expected to convene at 3 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) to formally approve the ceasefire deal. Netanyahu’s office clarified that the agreement would go into force immediately after Cabinet endorsement.
In contrast, Israel’s public broadcaster KAN and Egypt’s Al Qahera News reported that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas had already taken effect at 0900 GMT, highlighting conflicting accounts over the truce’s implementation.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi confirmed that an agreement was reached “to end the war in Gaza after two years of suffering,” but did not specify when the ceasefire would begin. He said the accord aligns with the peace plan proposed earlier by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The breakthrough came after several days of intensive negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, resulting in a 20-point agreement that includes the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a complete ceasefire, disarmament of Hamas, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
The plan, first presented on September 29, was brokered under Egyptian mediation with U.S. support.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 67,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has rendered much of the enclave uninhabitable, with severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean water deepening the humanitarian crisis.
