Sanaa, Yemen – At least 30 African migrants were killed and dozens more injured in U.S. airstrikes targeting a detention center in northern Yemen, Houthi officials announced on Sunday. The strikes reportedly hit a facility in the Saada governorate, an area frequently affected by the ongoing conflict.
According to Houthi spokespersons, the detention center housed hundreds of migrants, primarily from African nations, who were seeking refuge or onward passage toward the Gulf region. The group condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous crime” against civilians and migrants, and urged international organizations to launch an independent investigation.
The U.S. has not officially responded to the accusations. However, the strikes are believed to be part of intensified operations against Houthi military targets amid rising tensions in the Red Sea and surrounding areas. Human rights groups have repeatedly warned of the risks to civilians, particularly vulnerable migrant populations, trapped in conflict zones.
Witnesses at the scene described the devastation, with rescue teams struggling to pull survivors from the rubble. Medical sources confirmed that many of the injured are in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among humanitarian organizations, with calls for accountability and urgent protection measures for migrants in Yemen. The United Nations and other agencies have expressed deep concern and are seeking immediate access to the site to assess the humanitarian impact.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen, now in its tenth year, has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with migrants often caught in the crossfire.
