Australia secured a thrilling 184-run victory against India in the fourth Test at Melbourne, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The match saw a dramatic final session as India, chasing an improbable 340, collapsed from 112-3 at tea to 155 all out.
Australia’s bowlers, led by captain Pat Cummins (3-28) and Scott Boland (3-39), delivered under pressure. Cummins dismissed top-scorer Yashasvi Jaiswal (84) in a controversial decision, while Nathan Lyon sealed the win by trapping Mohammed Siraj lbw.
The collapse began when Rishabh Pant, after a solid 88-run partnership with Jaiswal, fell for 30, attempting a reckless slog. India’s middle-order faltered quickly, with Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep offering little resistance. Jasprit Bumrah scored his second duck, leaving Washington Sundar unbeaten on five.
Cummins’ all-around performance was instrumental, taking six wickets and contributing 90 runs across both innings. He described the victory as a testament to the team’s resilience, saying, “We found a way to get the job done.”
India’s captain Rohit Sharma, who failed again with the bat, acknowledged missed opportunities. “We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize,” he said. He also highlighted Australia’s crucial last-wicket partnership of 61 in the second innings as a turning point.
The match broke attendance records for Australian cricket, with 373,591 fans over five days. Australia’s Travis Head praised the atmosphere, calling it one of the best Test matches he had experienced.
The final Test begins Friday in Sydney, where India must win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
