Doha, January 28, 2026: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for the “full force of the law” against a man allegedly attempting to bomb a rally in Perth, Xinhua and local media reported.

The 31-year-old suspect was detained after reportedly throwing a homemade explosive device into a crowd of approximately 2,500 people who had gathered to mark Australia Day. No injuries occurred, as the device failed to detonate.

The rally coincided with Indigenous Australians’ “Invasion Day” events, commemorating the historical impacts of European settlement on Indigenous communities. Police confirmed that the suspect faces charges of making explosives and intending harm, while investigations continue into possible terrorism-related offences.

Authorities found materials consistent with homemade bomb construction during a search of the man’s residence. Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch described the incident as a “hostile act” while officials examine potential political, ideological, or religious motives.

Prime Minister Albanese described the event as “quite shocking” and emphasized that prosecution should proceed to the full extent of the law. Western Australia Premier Roger Cook urged unity, stating, “We can’t let hate win. Our differences and diversity make Australia the country we all love.”

The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on February 17. Authorities continue to investigate the incident as part of broader security measures following recent attacks in Australia, including last December’s deadly Sydney festival shooting.
