Baku, September 4, 2025 (rki.news) – Azerbaijan has commenced construction of one of the region’s most advanced battery energy storage systems, aimed at strengthening renewable energy integration and ensuring grid stability, the state energy company AzerEnerji announced Thursday.
The project, the largest of its kind in the Commonwealth of Independent States, includes installations at the 500-kilovolt Absheron substation near Baku and the 220-kilovolt Agdash substation in central Azerbaijan. Once completed, the facilities will provide 250 megawatts of capacity and 500 megawatt-hours of storage, playing a vital role in balancing peak demand, preventing power disruptions, and enabling rapid recovery in case of outages.
AzerEnerji said the initiative supports the government’s ambitious renewable energy roadmap, which seeks to integrate 2 gigawatts of new solar and wind power into the national grid by 2027, further enhancing Azerbaijan’s role as a regional leader in sustainable energy development.
