On the occasion of the 54th Anniversary of the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Qatar, hosted a reception in honour of high-ranking Qatari dignitaries, ambassadors, and diplomats. The event took place on 9 April 2025 at a renowned hotel in Doha.
H.E. Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al-Ghanim, Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs of the State of Qatar, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhroo, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador Ali Ibrahim Ahmed, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Eritrea, also attended as special guests.
A large number of ambassadors, diplomats, senior officials, and prominent figures from Qatar’s business and media sectors were present. Selected members of the Bangladeshi community in Qatar also joined the celebration.
The event commenced with the national anthems of Qatar and Bangladesh. The Guest of Honour and special guests joined Ambassador Nazrul Islam in a ceremonial cake cutting to mark the occasion. Guests enjoyed a moment of unity as the cake was cut, symbolizing both the independence of Bangladesh and the enduring friendship between Qatar and Bangladesh.
In his remarks, Ambassador Islam paid homage to the martyrs, women freedom fighters, and valiant heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. He also expressed deep gratitude to the international friends who supported and recognized an independent Bangladesh, highlighting the global solidarity that played a crucial role in the country’s liberation.
He praised Qatar’s remarkable achievements under the leadership of His Highness the Amir, particularly in the fields of development, diplomacy, and sports. The ambassador lauded the successful organization of the prestigious FIFA World Cup 2022, which he described as a testament to Qatar’s growing influence on the global stage. He further emphasized Qatar’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and its strong international presence.
Ambassador Islam also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Qatari government for the ongoing support provided to the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Qatar. He noted that Qatar’s hospitality, social welfare programs, and labor policies have made a profound impact on the lives of Bangladeshis working in the country, strengthening the bond between the two nations.
The ambassador highlighted the flourishing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Qatar, underscoring how these ties have expanded beyond the traditional labor market to encompass key sectors such as trade, investment, energy cooperation, defense, education, tourism, culture, sports, and human resource development. He expressed hope that the forthcoming visit of the Hon’ble Chief Adviser of Bangladesh to Qatar in April 2025 would serve as a milestone in further deepening these strategic ties.
In his speech, Ambassador Islam also briefly discussed the unprecedented youth-led movement in Bangladesh in 2024, highlighting the vital role of youth activism in shaping the country’s political future. He praised the interim government under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus for spearheading crucial reforms aimed at restoring democracy, fostering development, and ensuring a prosperous future for all citizens.
The celebration featured an exhibition showcasing Bangladesh’s glorious history, rich cultural heritage, and traditional products. A variety of iconic Bangladeshi art, textiles, and handcrafted goods were displayed, offering guests a glimpse into the country’s vibrant traditions. Attendees also savored a selection of traditional Bangladeshi cuisine and desserts, celebrating the flavors and culinary richness of Bangladesh.
