Washington: U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has called on President Joe Biden to stop supplying weapons to Israel amid its ongoing conflict in Gaza.
“When Congress returns, I will move Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block offensive arms sales to Israel,” Sanders announced on social media platform X. He further urged Biden to act immediately, accusing Israel of violating both U.S. and international laws by “using starvation as a tool of its all-out war against the Palestinian people.”
Sanders’ statement followed the leak of a letter warning Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza within 30 days or face a potential U.S. arms embargo. The letter was reportedly co-signed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, expressing concern over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza.
Last month, Sanders introduced legislation to block over $20 billion in U.S. arms sales to Israel, citing violations of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and the Arms Export Control Act (AECA).
The Senate is expected to vote on the proposed Joint Resolutions of Disapproval when it reconvenes in November.
