London, April 10 (Xinhua) – The British government on Friday announced new legal measures to strengthen action against harmful online pornography, including criminalizing possession or publication of content depicting incest or adults pretending to be children. The proposals have been introduced as amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill.
Officials said the reforms are part of a wider strategy to combat abusive online material, protect children, and reduce violence against women and girls. Under the changes, those publishing such content could face up to five years in prison.
The government also plans stricter accountability for technology companies. Senior executives could face personal liability, including fines or imprisonment, if platforms fail to comply with orders to remove non-consensual intimate images.
Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan said the measures aim to ensure stronger responsibility from tech leaders in preventing online abuse. He stressed that compliance is not optional but a fundamental duty for platforms and their leadership.
The government said the laws are designed to modernize online safety enforcement, close legal loopholes, and strengthen protection for vulnerable groups online.
Officials added the legislation reflects growing concerns over harmful content and the need for faster regulatory action.
