The Canadian Liberal Party is set to announce a new leader and Prime Minister on Sunday as the country faces a critical trade war with the United States. This leadership change comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to step down, following a sharp decline in his approval rating after nine years in power.
The successor will inherit the difficult task of negotiating with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened further tariffs on Canada. Trudeau’s departure is adding to the political tension as the country braces for a potential election against the opposition Conservatives.
Mark Carney, former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor, is the front-runner, backed by a significant portion of Trudeau’s cabinet and most party members. His primary challenger, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, has touted her experience in dealing with Trump but has struggled to distance herself from Trudeau’s policies.
Carney’s victory would be historic, marking the first time an outsider with no political background would become Prime Minister. His platform includes retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. and a strategy to stimulate Canadian economic growth, which he believes has stagnated under Trudeau.
With the Liberal Party’s fortunes rebounding, especially in the face of Trump’s trade threats, the party is now statistically tied with the Conservatives in key polls. The new leader faces immediate decisions, including whether to call an election before Parliament reconvenes.
