Ottawa, March 23 (QNA) – Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday called for holding snap legislative elections on April 28, amid the trade crisis and tension between his country and the United States.
Speaking before the press corps, Carney called on Canadians to grant a strong mandate to confront US President Donald Trump, asserting that Trump seeks to dismantle Canada in order to possess it and seize its resources. He highlighted that Canada is engaged in comprehensive negotiations with the US until President Trump shows the respect that Canada deserves as a sovereign nation.
For this reason, Canada strives to maintain positive relationships with Washington as far as possible, he said, adding that, at the end of the day, the Americans themselves will be affected by the trading policies Trump is enforcing.
Carney affirmed that he is confident the negotiations with the Trump Administration will be conducted in a comprehensive and respectful way.
Tension prevails between the US and Canada following the additional 25% tariffs Washington imposed in early March on products imported from Canada and Mexico.
