Ottawa, March 05 (QNA) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hit back against US President Donald Trump following his decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing him of planning “a total collapse of the Canadian economy” with the aim that it will “make it easier to annex us.”
One of President Trump’s goals is to subjugate Canada economically, with the goal of eventually annexing it to the US, as he has threatened to do on several occasions, Radio Canada quoted Trudeau as saying.
Trudeau pointed out that Canada will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization to denounce the US’ violation of the free trade agreement, which was signed between Washington, Ottawa and Mexico in 2018, during Trump’s first term.
Since returning to the White House, the US president has threatened Canada’s sovereignty, reiterated his desire to make the country the 51st US state, and spoken of Trudeau as governor.
Trump accuses Canada of not doing enough to stop the opioid fentanyl trade, even though Canadian authorities have doubled down on initiatives in this direction in recent months, including introducing a $1.3 billion border plan and appointing an anti-fentanyl commissioner.
Canadian authorities also confirm that the amount of fentanyl seized at border crossings represents only a small portion (less than 1%) of the quantities of drugs seized in the US.
